La Moskitia is a jungle region which lies within the borders of Honduras and Nicaragua. Our foundation implements its development projects in the Wampusirpi zone, which is a village alongside the Patuca river.

It is a rural, poor region, separated from Honduras’s society. La Moskitia suffers from the lack of several basic necessities such as a public health system, food, education, and an established economy.  The SiD Moskitia foundation works to minimize the absence of these basic needs and solve problems in the Wampusirpi area.

The Wampusirpi area is made up of 20 villages and has a total population of 6000 inhabitants. There are three types of indigenous groups including the Miskitos, Tawahkas, and Ladinos that live together within the Wampusirpi. Each of these groups has its own culture and language, but each also speaks the official Honduran language, Spanish. In this rural region agriculture is currently the main means of subsistence.

In order to get to Wampusirpi many modes of transportation are needed. The area is cut off by its seclusive location in the middle of the jungle. It takes two full days to travel up the Patuca river from the nearest city. Arriving by small aircraftis also possible, but expensive; this takes a couple of hours from Puerto Lempira.
